What Lent means to me this year

Introduction to ‘Just as I am’

In her early 40s, Charlotte Elliott’s health deteriorated and she became an invalid, bedridden for fairly long stretches at a time. Her brother was organising an enormous bazaar to raise money to open a school for poorer children. Many people were involved and Charlotte felt she could contribute virtually nothing, so she wrote "Just as I am, without one plea.....O Lamb of God, I come”, in the hope it might sell a few copies.

It was an instant success. Shortly after the fund-raising event it was written for, it was published further afield, and was soon selling all over England in large numbers, It was then set to music and became the hymn that is so well-known.

THE LORD'S PRAYER:

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen
